Bearing Fault Detection Using Hilbert and High Frequency Resolution Techniques

ABSTRACT

This paper presents new methods based on fusion of Hilbert transform and high frequency resolution techniques (estimation of signal parameter by rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT), root multiple signal classification (root MUSIC)) to extract bearing defect frequencies of induction motor bearing faults using vibration signal. Further sliding window concept is introduced to tackle abnormal conditions like load variation and supply frequency variation. It also proposes a decision based approach to classify the severity of bearing fault. A series of results shows that both sliding window Hilbert-ESPRIT and sliding window Hilbert-root MUSIC are capable of extracting bearing defect frequencies accurately but, sliding window Hilbert-ESPRIT takes less computational time than the sliding window Hilbert-root MUSIC.

Sanjay Agrawal received the B Tech degree in electrical and electronics engineering from UPTU, Lucknow, India, in 2009, and the M Tech degree in condition monitoring, control and protection of electrical apparatus from the NIT, Hamirpur, India, in 2012. Soumya R. Mohanty received the PhD degree from IIT, Kharagpur, India. He is at present an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, NIT, Allahabad, India. He has worked as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Beira Interior, Portugal. His research area includes digital signal processing applications in power system relaying and power quality (PO), and pattern recognition applications to distributed generation (DG) based system.

Vineeta Agarwal received the BE and ME degrees in electrical engineering from Allahabad University, Allahabad, India, in 1980 and 1984, respectively, and the PhD degree in power electronics from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College, Allahabad. She joined the Electrical Engineering Department, Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College, Allahabad, India, as a lecturer in 1982 where she is now working as a professor. Her research focuses on the areas of single- to three-phase conversion and ac drives. She has taught numerous courses in electrical engineering and electronics. She has a number of publications in journals and conferences in her field. She has attended and presented papers at both national and international conferences.
