Dual Band Circularly Polarized Monopole Antenna Design for RF Energy Harvesting

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the design of a multiband microstrip monopole antenna with circular polarization and impedance 377 Ω for radio frequency energy harvesting in the CDMA (869–890 MHz) and GSM (935–960 MHz, 1810–1880 MHz) bands. The antenna structure is simulated using electromagnetic software Computer Simulation Technology (CST) transient solver. The parametric study on the antenna dimension is conducted to achieve 10 dB return loss bandwidth and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth over the desired frequency ranges. The gain of the antenna varies from 3.5–4 dBi over the impedance bandwidth. The experimental results for prototype antenna show well agreement with the simulated results.

Saswati Ghosh received her MSc (Radio Physics and Electronics) and MTech (Microwaves) degrees from Burdwan University, West Bengal, India, in 1995 and 1997, respectively. She received her PhD degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in August 2004. She had received the Young Scientist Fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in the years 2006 and 2010. Currently, she is working as a scientist (under the Women Scientist scheme, DST, India) in the Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. For the last 17 years, she is engaged in active research in the area of EMI/EMC/ESD on spacecraft bodies, EMI/EMC measurements and EMI sensors, estimation of EMC of high-frequency electronic systems, RF energy harvesting, etc. She has 14 international journal publications, two book chapters, and more than 60 publications including national journal, national/international conference proceedings.

Ajay Chakrabarty

Ajay Chakrabarty received the BTech, MTech, and PhD degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in 1975, 1977, and 1982, respectively. He joined the Radar Centre in 1972 and is currently a professor in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering of the same Institute. He worked as assistant professor in Syracuse University from 1990 to 1992. He has worked in various responsible positions e.g. Dean Alumni Affairs and International Relations, Dean of Continuing Education, Chairman, Space Technology Cell and H.O.D., Dept. of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering of IIT Kharagpur. He worked as vice chancellor in Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi, for two years and a half. His research interests include array antenna design, antenna feeds, numerical modelling of waveguide junctions, EMI / EMC measurements, and EMI sensors. He has more than 80 international journal publications and many national journal and national/international conference publications. He had guided 18 PhD scholars (awarded) and many M.Tech. and B.Tech. students. He was recipient of INSA-COASTED fellowship to attend as an invited Scientist in the twenty-first general assembly of URSI in Florence, Italy (28 Aug.–5 Sept. 1984), under the URSI Young Scientist Award Scheme. He was elected senior member IEEE in 1990 and reviewer IEEE Transactions on Antennas & Propagation. He was the member, Technical Reviewer Committee, 1990 AP/S, URSI Symposium held at Dallas, Texas, USA. He was the convener of Third International Conference on Electromagnetic Interference & Compatibility (INCEMIC) Calcutta, December, 1992. He received the SEMCE(I) award for contribution in teaching & research. He was involved in more than 30 research projects sponsored by ISRO, DRDO, and other organizations as principal investigator and consultant.
