Abstract

The direct service mission of most recreation and leisure providers (e.g., providing instruction and interpretation, leading activity programs, coaching athletics, supporting special events, etc.) fosters a wide array of volunteer opportunities. However, the concept of volunteerism has significantly changed as a result of contemporary lifestyles and time constraints, as well as the Internet and relevant technologies. This article describes how volunteerism has evolved over the years and how recreational providers can facilitate and motivate various forms of volunteerism.
