Conversation and Commentary: FEMEN’s Sextremism as (Imperialist?) Feminism

Combating Epistemic Violence With Islamic Feminism: Qahera vs. FEMEN

Pages 384-387 | Published online: 01 Dec 2015

Notes

In one comic, Qahera appears with a friend who recognizes her despite (or perhaps in part due to) her traditional garb.

There are many other coverings used by Muslim women that represent oppression to outsiders unfamiliar with their symbolism: shayla, al-amir, chador, etc.

For more information regarding the specifics of the FEMEN protests I allude to here, see Cassidy; Cochrane; Wilson; FEMEN.
