Psychosynthesis of the brain and mind: Comments on a new intellectual framework in psychiatry and psychotherapy

Abstract

Eric R. Kandel, the Nobel Prize winner of 2000 in physiology and medicine, emphasises five scientific principles of which psychiatrists must be aware and which are presented and critically analysed in this article. Kandel states that professional requirements for future psychiatrists will impose a greater knowledge of the structure and functioning of the brain, and that the rationale for the unique domain that psychiatry occupies within academic medicine is the analysis and understanding of the interaction between the social and biological determinants of behaviour. The work of a psychotherapist is based both on scientific knowledge and, to a large extent, on an empathic understanding of the patient's history as well as his or her verbal and non-verbal expressions – as a consequence, the orientation of hermeneutic philosophy and semiotics should also be included in the intellectual framework. The aim of this paper is to update the channels of communication between modern neurobiology, psychoanalysis, semiotics and philosophy to the best advantage for their multidisciplinary, holistic cooperation.

Majava H. Psychosynthese von Gehirn und Geist – Kommentare zu einem neuen Bezugssystem von Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie

Eric R. Kandel, der Nobel Preisträger 2000 in Physiologie und Medizin stellt folgende fünf wissenschaftliche Prinzipien dar, die sich Psychiater vergegenwärtigen sollten und welche in diesem Artikel dargelegt und kritisch analysiert werden. Kandel konstatiert, daß berufliche Erfordernisse für zukünftige Psychiater größeres Wissen der Struktur und der Funktionsweise des Gehirns auferlegen werden und daß das Rationale des einzigartigen Gebiets der Psychiatrie innerhalb der Medizin in der Analyse und dem Verständnis der Interaktion zwischen sozialen und biologischen Determinanten des Verhaltens besteht. Die Arbeit eines Psychotherapeuten basiert sich auf wissenschaftlichen Kenntnissen und in einem großem Ausmaß auf dem empathischen Verstehen der Geschichte des Patienten ebenso wie auf seinen oder ihren verbalen und nonverbalen Äußerungen – als eine Folge sollten auch die Orientierung an hermeneutischer Philosophie und Semiotik in den intellektuellen Rahmen einbezogen werden. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit besteht darin, die Kommunikationskanäle zwischen moderner Neurobiologie, Psychoanalyse, Semiotik und Philosophie zum Besten ihrer Multidisziplinarität und holistischen Kooperation auf den neuesten Stand zu bringen.

Eric R. Kandel, ganador en el año 2000 del premio Nobel en fisiologia y medicina, muestra cinco principios de los que los psiquiatras deben ser conscientes y que son presentados y analizados criticamente en este articulo. Kandel estableció que los requisitos profesionales para los futuros psiquiatras, impondran mayor conocimiento de la estructura y del funcionamiento del cerebro y de la razón para el único dominio que la psiquitria ocupa desde la academia de medicina, es el analisis y comprensión de la interacción entre los determinantes del comportamiento social y biológico. El trabajo de un psicoterapeúta esta basado en ambos, el conocimiento cientifico-de forma extensa, y sobre la comprensión empática de la historia del paciente así como sus expresiones verbales y no verbales- como una consecuencia de la orientación de la filosofia hermeneútica y semiótica, también debería ser incluida en el armazón intelectual. El objetivo de este trabajo es poner al día los canales de comunicación entre la moderna neurobiología, psicoanálisis, semiótica y filosofia para el mejor aprovechamiento de su multidisciplinaria cooperación holística.
