Phyllida Shaw majored in History for a degree in European Studies at Lancaster University (1981). She was Research Officer with the National Campaign for the Arts and a journalist with Rhinegold Publishing before becoming a full-time freelance researcher, writer and consultant in the cultural and voluntary sector. Clients have included the four Arts Councils of the British Isles, Historic England, the National Trust, grant-making trusts and individual cultural organisations. She was a founder of Arts Research Digest has contributed articles to arts and heritage publications including Classical Music, Museums Journal, the Royal Academy Magazine, a-n, Mailout and the Journal of the Scottish Society of Art History.
