Table 1. Some aspects of natural ageing.

Age range	Function
20–29	Brain starts ageing – brain neurons start to decrease. After 40 they decrease more rapidly affecting memory.
30–39	Bone loss begins – osteoporosis and arthritis develop.
40–49	Eyes start ageing – lenses can become clouded resulting in cataracts. Lens becomes less pliable – less able to focus on near objects resulting in long sightedness.
50–59	Osteoporosis – becomes more common resulting in fractures occurring more easily.
60–69	Cardiovascular – 40–50% of people over the age of 65 have high blood pressure.
70+	Risk of dementia increases.
