Regendering space and reconstructing identity: Bedouin women's translocal mobility into Israeli-Jewish institutions of higher education

Abstract

This article offers a geographic perspective on the mutually constitutive relations between institutions of higher education and Bedouin women's gendered spaces, identities and roles. Situated beyond Bedouin women's permitted space and embedded in Israeli-Jewish space, institutions of higher education are sites of displacement that present Bedouin women students with new normative structures, social interactions and opportunities for academic learning. As such, they become a discursive arena for the articulation and reconstruction of their previously held conceptions and identities. Often the journey to institutions of higher education signifies for Bedouin women the first opportunity to venture out of their community. Traveling to the university as students, returning home as educated women and embarking on professional careers outside tribal neighborhoods and villages involves moving across and beyond different locales. Such translocal mobility necessitates constant negotiation between seemingly contradictory cultural constructs and the development of varied spatial bridging strategies. The article seeks to contribute to Bedouin gender studies by going beyond the functional role of higher education institutions as well as the gendered hierarchies of women's mobility, placing emphasis, instead, on the effects of socio-spatial contextuality that shapes Bedouin women's experiences.

Este artículo ofrece una perspectiva geográfica de las relaciones mutuamente constitutivas entre las instituciones de educación superior y los espacios, las identidades y los roles generizados de las mujeres beduinas. Situadas más allá del espacio permitido a las mujeres beduinas e insertadas en el espacio israelí-judío, las instituciones de educación superior son sitios de desplazamiento que presentan nuevas estructuras normativas, interacciones sociales y oportunidades para el aprendizaje académico a las estudiantes mujeres beduinas. Como tales, se tornan una arena discursiva para la articulación y reconstrucción de sus concepciones e identidades previas. A menudo, para las mujeres beduinas el paso a las instituciones de educación superior significa la primera oportunidad para aventurarse fuera de sus comunidades. Viajar a la universidad como estudiantes, volver al hogar como mujeres educadas y embarcarse en carreras profesionales fuera de los barrios y las villas tribales implica moverse a través y más allá de diferentes sitios. Dicha movilidad translocal necesita una constante negociación entre construcciones culturales aparentemente contradictorias y el desarrollo de una variedad de estrategias espaciales para tender puentes. El artículo busca contribuir a los estudios de género beduinos yendo más allá del rol funcional de las instituciones de educación superior, así como también de las jerarquías generizadas de movilidad de las mujeres, poniendo énfasis, en cambio, en los efectos de la contextualidad socioespacial que moldea las experiencias de las mujeres beduinas.

本文对高等教育机构和贝多因女性的性别化空间，认同与角色之间相互建构的关系提供了地理的视角。高等教育机构坐落于贝多因女性允许活动的空间之外，处于以色列犹太区之中，对贝多因女学生而言是位移之地，提供崭新的规范性结构，社会互动，以及学术学习的机会。这些空间因而成为接合，重构她们早先拥有的认知与认同的论述场域。对贝多因女性而言，前往高等教育机构的旅程往往意味着第一次踏出社区探险的机会。以学生身分前往就读大学，以受高等教育的女性身分返回家中，并在部落邻里与村落之外从事专业工作，皆包含了在不同地方之间与之外的移动过程。这种跨地方的能动性，必须在看似冲突的文化建置中持续进行协商，并发展出各种空间连结策略。本文试图透过强调形塑贝多因女性经验的社会—空间脉络，超越高等教育机构的功能化角色，以及女性能动性的性别化阶层之观点，以此对贝多因的性别研究做出贡献。
