Negotiating male gatekeeper violence in team-based research on Bangladeshi migrant women in Malaysia

Abstract

While the field of migration studies is expanding to understand the nuanced experiences of women across Asia, there has been little discussion of how these studies were conducted. This article draws on the reflective accounts of three researchers on a team project investigating the lived experiences of female Bangladeshi migrant workers in Malaysia. While the research aims centred on understanding the lives of the Bangladeshi migrant women, the team spent a significant amount of time negotiating male gatekeeper violence in the field. The article further describes the researchers’ experiences of sexual harassment and intimidation, and explores these through the complex locations of the migrant workers and the female researchers in the field site. In addition, the article deals with the way in which the team’s feminist research sensibilities were challenged in the context of negotiating that violence. The ethical dilemma of continuing the research in the face of persistent violence was dealt with by discussing approaches employed in managing the violence. Analysing male gatekeeper violence in the field, allowed for conversations around the intersection of migration and masculinities. This auto-ethnography reveals methodological concerns for female researchers and exposes the negotiated nature of the front line of migration research.

Aunque el campo de los estudios de migración se está expandiendo para entender las matizadas experiencias de las mujeres a lo largo de Asia, ha habido poco análisis de cómo estos estudios fueron llevados a cabo. Este artículo se basa en los relatos reflexivos de tres investigadoras sobre un proyecto en equipo que investiga las experiencias de las mujeres trabajadoras bangladeshíes migrantes en Malasia. Aunque la investigación apuntó a comprender las vidas de las mujeres bangladeshíes migrantes, el equipo pasó una cantidad de tiempo significativa negociando la violencia de los guardias varones en el campo. El artículo describe las experiencias de acoso sexual e intimidación de las investigadoras y las explora a través de las complejas locaciones de las mujeres migrantes y las investigadoras mujeres en el campo. El artículo también aborda la forma en que las sensibilidades de la investigación feminista del equipo fueron desafiadas en el contexto de la negociación de esa violencia. El dilema ético de continuar la investigación frente a la violencia persistente se abordó discutiendo los enfoques utilizados para manejar a esta última. El análisis de la violencia de los guardias varones en el campo permitió las conversaciones sobre la intersección de migración y masculinidades. Esta auto-etnografía revela temas metodológicos de importancia para las investigadoras mujeres y expone la naturaleza negociada de la investigación sobre migración en contacto con la gente.

儘管移民研究领域正在向理解亚洲各地女性的细緻经验之方向扩展，但却显少有讨论探究这些研究如何进行。本文运用三位研究者对于参与探讨马来西亚的孟加拉女性移民工的生活经验之团队研究计画的反思。虽然该计画旨在理解孟加拉女性移民工的生活，但该研究团队却耗费了大量的时间，与田野中的男性守门人暴力进行协商。本文进一步描绘研究者受到性骚扰和恫吓的经验，并透过移民工和女性研究者在田野中的复杂位置探讨之。此外，本文处理该团队的女性主义研究敏感度在协商上述暴力的脉络中受到挑战的方式。透过探讨管理暴力所应用的方式，应对面对持续的暴力时继续进行研究的道德困境。分析田野中的男性守门人暴力，考虑到移民和男性气概相互交织的相关对话。此一自我民族志揭露了女性研究者的研究方法考量，并暴露了移民研究前线的协商本质。
