Notes

1. This colonial war took place between October 1935 and May 1936 between the armed forces of Italy and the armed forces of the Ethiopian Empire. This brief war resulted in the military occupation of Ethiopia and its annexation into the colony of Italian East Africa.

2. Rudolfo Graziani was one of Benito Mussolini's military commanders.

3. Mengistu Haile Mariam was a leader in the Communist military junta that inflicted a reign of terror against opponents to the junta, and reputedly responsible for the deaths of 1,2 million people. He helped overthrow the Ethiopian monarchy. Discredited as a dictator, he ruled as President of Ethiopia between 1974-1987.

4. Ububele is an Nguni word meaning ‘kindness’. This is a non-governmental organisation established by clinical psychologists, Tony and Hilary Hamburger in 1999 in Kew, on the border of Alexander township in Johannesburg. The organisation uses community-based psychosocial care and support as means to address the emotional trauma of South Africa's past, the on-going mental and physical trauma of life in the cycle of poverty and its daily manifestations faced by disadvantaged individuals, families and communities. Hannah is an active board member of this organisation.
