Brian Shoesmith’s contributions to Bangladesh’s media and cultural studies

ABSTRACT

Brian Shoesmith, an Australian academic, spent the last phase of his academic journey in Bangladesh. He contributed to developing a new Media Studies and Journalism department in a relatively new private university in Bangladesh. Also, he served as an academic adviser in the University of Liberal Arts (ULAB). He initiated to publish an anthology on Bangladeshi media and culture which was first of its kind. This article reviews Brian Shoesmith’s contributions to Bangladeshi media and cultural studies. The writer, a Bangladeshi scholar, contributed to the volume edited by Brian Shoesmith and they jointly wrote a book. Brian Shoesmith’s teaching and research philosophies are also explored in the paper.

Fahmidul Haq

Fahmidul Haq is currently located in the USA as visiting professor at University of Notre Dame at the Department of Film, Television and Theatre. He has authored and edited 14 books mostly in Bengali. His international titles are being published from Routledge, Washington University Press, Intellect and Lapland University Press. His current book project (under review at Routledge) deals with identity politics in cinema. His areas of interests include Film Studies, Critical Media Studies, South Asian Studies and New Media Culture. He is a defender of freedom of expression and peoples’ rights in the context of Bangladesh. He uses online platforms extensively as tools of his activism. He has taught at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh for nearly two decades. He earned his PhD degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia.
