Abstract
In this research, the evolution of contact characteristics during the scuffing process under mixed lubrication in a point contact was studied. The simulation was based on a ball-on-disc contact geometry. Contact mechanics and plasto-elastohydrodynamic lubrication models were used to simulate the surface interactions and to analyze the contact characteristics by taking into account the real surface roughness profile and plastic deformation in the contact area. The contact pressure, film thickness, contact area ratio, subsurface effective plastic strain, subsurface stress, and wear volume were obtained from the simulation. A comparison between the simulation and experimental results for the wear volume showed good agreement. The critical parameters that indicate the initiation of scuffing were identified. The critical values of subsurface effective plastic strain, contact area ratio, and λ ratio were obtained and could be used as indicators of scuffing initiation.
