Numerical Computation of Unsteady Flows with an Implicit Spectral Method over a Disk in Still Air

Pages 40-53 | Received 23 Apr 2009, Accepted 24 Nov 2009, Published online: 19 Jan 2010

Abstract

An implicit numerical scheme is proposed here for the solution of transient flows. The numerical method is based on the spectral Chebyshev collocation technique in the direction normal to the disk and forward marching in time. The magnetohydrodynamic time-dependent von Karman flow with the inclusion of Hall current due to a porous spined-up disk impulsively set into motion is treated by the method. The physical parameters of paramount interest as such the skin-friction coefficients, the torque, and the rate of heat transfer from the disk surface are numerically calculated that are shown to approach their steady state counterparts.
