Abstract
This document is in three parts, representing three temporal points in Tim Crouch's attempts to understand and reply to the sometimes aggressively negative responses provoked by his play The Author. Part 1 is a letter written in reply to an angry audience member following the Royal Court premiere run in2009. Part 2, presented as a talk during the play's 2010 UK tour, offers anambivalent response to other negative feedback. Part 3, written to complete this article in March 2011, looks back on theplay's performance history to date, following its final dates in Los Angeles.
