A meta-analysis of the relation between patient adult attachment style and the working alliance

Abstract

This meta-analysis synthesizes research on the relation between patient adult attachment style and patient-rated working alliance. A random-effects model was used to calculate the mean weighted product-moment correlation (r) for 24 studies (12 published in peer-reviewed journals and 12 unpublished doctoral dissertations) of individual outpatient therapy with adults. The mean weighted r for attachment avoidance and alliance was −.137, p<.001, and the mean weighted r for attachment anxiety and alliance was −.121, p<.001. These findings suggest that therapists should attend to attachment in order to foster alliance and have additional implications for theory and future research.

Diese Meta-Analyse fasst die Forschung zum Zusammenhang von Bindungsstilen Erwachsener und der patienteneingeschätzten therapeutischen Allianz zusammen. Ein Random-Effekt Model wurde genutzt, um die mittleren gewichteten Produkt-Moment-Korrelationen (r) von 24 Studien (12 in peer-reviewd Jounals publiziert, 12 unpublizierte Doktorarbeiten) ambulanter Einzeltherapie mit Erwachsenen zu berechnen. Die mittlere gewichtete r für Bindungsvermeidung und Allianz war −.137, p < .001, und die mittlere gewichtete r für Bindungsängstlichkeit und Allianz war −.121, p < .001. Diese Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass Therapeuten auf Bindung achten sollten, um die Therapeutische Allianz zu stärken und haben weitere Implikationen für die Theorie und weitere Forschung.

Esta meta-análise resume a investigação sobre a relação entre o estilo de vinculação adulta do cliente e a aliança terapêutica avaliada pelo cliente. Um modelo de efeitos aleatórios foi utilizado para calcular a média ponderada do coeficiente produto-momento (r) de 24 estudos (12 publicados em revistas com revisão por pares e 12 teses de doutoramento não publicadas) de terapia individual com adultos em regime de ambulatório. A média ponderada do r entre vinculação evitante e aliança terapêutica foi de −.137, p < .001, e a média ponderada do r para vinculação ansiosa foi de −.121, p < .001. Estes resultados sugerem que os terapeutas devem considerar a vinculação de forma a promoverem a aliança terapêutica e têm implicações adicionais para a teoria e investigação futura.

Questa meta-analisi sintetizza la ricerca sulla relazione tra lo stile di attaccamento del paziente adulto e la valutazione dell'alleanza di lavoro dello stesso paziente. E’ stato utilizzato un modello a effetti casuali per calcolare la media ponderata del prodotto-momento di correlazione ( r) su 24 studi (12 pubblicati su riviste peer-reviewed e 12 tesi di dottorato inedite) di terapia ambulatoriale individuale con gli adulti. La media ponderata r per l’ attaccamento evitante e alleanza era di − 0,137, p <.001, e la media ponderata r per l’ attaccamento ansioso e l'alleanza era − 0,121, p <.001. Questi risultati suggeriscono che i terapeuti dovrebbero prestare attenzione allo stile di attaccamento del paziente al fine di promuovere l'alleanza e avere ulteriori implicazioni per la teoria e la ricerca futura.

本後設分析旨在將病人成人依附型態與病人自評工作同盟二者間關係的研究加以整合。以隨機效 果模式計算24 篇針對門診成人病患個別心理治療的研究（其中12 篇發表在同儕審查的期刊，12 篇是未發表的博士論文）之加權積差相關平均值（r），結果發現迴避性依附與同盟之間的平均加 權相關為 −.137， p < .001，焦慮性依附與同盟之間的平均加權相關為 −.121， p < .001。依據研 究結果建議治療師應關注依附以促進同盟，研究結果亦對理論及進一步研究具有其他意涵。
