Abstract

The Yb3+/Er3+ ions of doubly doped phosphate glasses (PBaLaErYb) were fabricated through the method of melt and rapid quenching which are characterized using different spectroscopic techniques that include optical absorption, photoluminescence and fluorescence decay analyses. Near-infrared de-excitation spectra were measured in the 1.4–1.7 µm region under the 980 nm laser diode excitation and characteristic luminescence peak was observed at 1.53 µm that belongs to 4I13/24I15/2 (Er3+ ion) electronic level. All these results has been discussed and reviewed with variety of already investigated Yb3+/Er3+-doped oxide glasses to explore the potential applications for the development of optical devices. These results suggest that the investigated glasses can also be considered for waveguide laser source in optical and fiber amplifier applications near 1.53 µm.
