Beyond Financial Resources: Analyzing the Determinants of Export Activities of Emerging Market Social Enterprises

Abstract

Social enterprises pursue social and economic goals simultaneously, but little is known about how they start an exporting strategy, especially if they are from emerging markets. We examined the determinants of exports of 522 emerging markets social enterprises (EMSEs) from Colombia. Based on a quantitative approach, our results show that EMSEs leverage their resources to start export operations if, in addition to capital, they leverage their structural and experiential resources. Structural resources include externally validated accounting and financial books, process certifications, and exposure in trading shows; experiential resources include the firm’s staff having primary education.

RESUMEN

Las empresas sociales persiguen objetivos socioeconómicos simultáneamente, pero se sabe muy poco sobre cómo ponen en marcha una estrategia de exportación, especialmente si provienen de mercados emergentes. Examinamos los determinantes de las exportaciones de 522 empresas sociales de mercados emergentes de Colombia. Con base en un enfoque cuantitativo, los resultados obtenidos muestran que las EMSE (sigla en inglés para Empresas Sociales de Mercados Emergentes) apalancan sus recursos para iniciar operaciones de exportación cuando, además del capital, también lo hacen con sus recursos estructurales y experimentales. Los recursos estructurales incluyen libros contables y financieros validados externamente, certificaciones de procesos y exposición en ferias comerciales. De la misma manera, los recursos experimentales incluyen a los asociados de las empresas con educación primaria.

RESUMO

As empresas sociais almejam alcançar simultaneamente metas sociais e econômicas, mas sabe-se pouco sobre como dão início a uma estratégia de exportação, principalmente quando são de mercados emergentes. Analisamos os fatores determinantes das exportações de 522 empresas sociais de mercados emergentes na Colômbia. Com base em uma abordagem quantitativa os nossos resultados demonstram que as EMSE (sigla em inglês para Empresas Sociais de Mercados Emergentes) alavancam seus recursos para dar início às operações de exportação quando, além de capital, também alavancam seus recursos estruturais e empíricos. Os recursos estruturais incluem registros financeiros e livros contábeis homologados, certificação de processos e visibilidade em feiras comerciais. Por sua vez, os recursos empíricos incluem os colaboradores das empresas terem concluído o ensino fundamental.
