ABSTRACT
The aim of this article is to compare two European cities, Malmö and Ostrava, in terms of the implementation of the assumptions of sustainable urbanization with particular emphasis on environmental management. The research was carried out using the two techniques of field research and content analysis of these cities’ websites. Results of the research show that when implementing the strategy of sustainable urbanization in Malmö and Ostrava, city authorities adopt two different approaches. In Malmö the dominant activities are those which support the environment, in Ostrava, however, preference is given to more ‘passive’ initiatives.

Notes
1. The remaining 70 photos represent the same objects which have been presented in the article. The only difference is that these ones were taken from different angles.
2. Despite the fact that the second part of the research was carried out with a delay, there did not occur any significant changes in the space of both cities, as evidenced by the compatibility of the content of the websites of Malmö and Ostrava with the presented photos taken during the field part of the research.
