Communities, psychotherapeutic innovation and the diversity of international qualitative research in mental health

Abstract

The articles in this special issue are hugely varied in terms of their country of origin (Brazil, Finland, Italy, Malaysia and the UK); theoretical influences (e.g. Lacanian theory, cultural-historical approaches and relational theories) and method of qualitative analysis (e.g. content and thematic analyses, Lacanian discourse analysis, Grounded theory, ethnography and auto-ethnography). In this commentary, I will discuss each article in turn before moving on to address some common issues including: the relationship between therapeutic innovation and research; differing implicit models of subjectivity; the need for theoretically pluralistic approaches to interpretation; and the need to incorporate the views of service users.

LA DIVERSIDAD EN LA INVESTIGACION CUALITATIVA EN SALUD MENTAL A NIVEL INTERNACIONAL: Comentarios acerca de los articulos en esta edición

Los artículos en esta edición especial son muy variados en términos del país de origen (Brasil, Finlandia, Malasia y el Reino Unido), influencias teóricas (ej: teoría lacaniana, métodos historico-culturales y teorías relacionales) y métodos de análisis cualitativo (ej: análisis temático y de contenido, análisis lacaniano del discurso, ‘’ground theory’’), etnografía y auto-etnografía). El uso de métodos de investigación cualitativa en ciencias sociales como la Psicología, se ha incrementado mucho (Carrera-Fernández; Guardia-Olmos & Pero-Cebollero 2014) y en el campo de la salud mental (Harper -en imprenta-) y resulta inspirador ver semejante amplitud de trabajo internacional y de diversidad teóricay metodológica representados en el presente número de esta revista. En este comentario analizaré cada artículo antes de pasar a tratar algunos planteamientos communes.

La varietà della ricerca qualitativa internazionale nel campo della salute mentale: un commento agli articoli nello special issue

Gli articoli di questo numero sono estremamente variegati rispetto al paese di origine (Brasile, Finlandia, Italia, Malesia e Regno Unito), influssi teorici (ad esempio: la teoria lacaniana, approcci storico-culturali e le teorie relazionali) e metodo di analisi qualitativa (ad esempio: analisi dei contenuti e tematiche, analisi lacaniana del discorso, Grounded Theory, etnografia e auto-etnografia). I metodi di ricerca qualitativa sono sempre più utilizzati nelle scienze sociali quali la psicologia (Carrera-Fernandez, Guardia-Olmos & Peró-Cebollero, 2014) e in tutto il dominio della salute mentale in generale (Harper, in corso di stampa) ed è stimolante vedere un tale gamma di lavoro e tale diversità di teorie e metodi rappresentati in questo special issue. Nel presente commento vorrei discutere ciascun articolo prima di affrontare alcune questioni comuni.

Diversité de la recherche qualitative internationale en santé mentale : commentaire des articles formant l'édition spéciale

Les articles qui composent cette édition spéciale sont très divers quant à leur origine (Brésil, Finlande, Italie, Malaisie and Royaume-Uni), leurs influences théoriques (théorie lacanienne, approches historico-culturelles ou théories relationnelles par exemple) et les méthodes d’analyse des données (analyse thématique de contenu, analyse lacanienne du discours, théorie ancrée, ethnographie et auto-ethnographie par exemple). Les méthodes de recherche qualitatives sont de plus en plus utilisées dans les sciences sociales telles que la psychologie (Carrera-Fernández, Guàrdia-Olmos & Peró-Cebollero, 2014) et dans le domaine de la santé mentale de manière plus générale (Harper, sous presse). Il est donc stimulant de voir un tel éventail de travaux internationaux et une telle diversité dans les théories et méthodes représentées dans ce numéro spécial. Ce commentaire passe d’abord en revue chaque article puis aborde des questions fréquentes.

Η ποικιλομορφία στη διεθνή ποιοτική έρευνα στην ψυχική υγεία: Ένα σχόλιο για τα άρθρα στο ειδικό τεύχος

Τα άρθρα σε αυτό το ειδικό τεύχος διαφοροποιούνται σημαντικά ως προς τη χώρα προέλευσης (Βραζιλία, Φινλανδία, Ιταλία, Μαλαισία και Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο), ως προς τη θεωρητική κατεύθυνση (π.χ. Λακανική θεωρία, πολιτισμικο- ιστορικές προσεγγίσεις και σχεσιακές θεωρίες) και ως προς την μέθοδο της ποιοτικής ανάλυσης (π.χ. ανάλυση περιεχομένου και θεματική ανάλυση, Λακανική ανάλυση λόγου, Θεμελιωμένη Θεωρία, εθνογραφία και αυτοεθνογραφία). Οι ποιοτικές ερευνητικές μέθοδοι χρησιμοποιούνται ολοένα και περισσότερο στις κοινωνικές επιστήμες, όπως είναι η ψυχολογία (Carrera-Fernández, Guàrdia-Olmos &Peró-Cebollero, 2014) και γενικότερα στο πλαίσιο της ψυχικής υγείας (Harper, υπό δημοσίευση) και αποτελεί έμπνευση να βλέπει κανείς το ευρύ φάσμα της ερευνητικής εργασίας διεθνώς και την ποικιλομορφία όσον αφορά τη θεωρία και τη μέθοδο που εκπροσωπούνται σε αυτό το ειδικό τεύχος. Σε αυτό τα άρθρο, θα συζητήσω κάθε άρθρο ξεχωριστά και στη συνέχεια θα συζητήσω κάποια κοινά σημεία.
