Is Oedipus still blind? A countertransference take on love and hate in the consulting room

ABSTRACT

This paper begins with an illustration from the HBO series ‘In Treatment’ and alludes to the gender bias in the portrayal of male and female analysts’ erotic countertransference on screen. The author includes several clinical vignettes from her clinical practice, taking a critical stance on the use of the oedipal myth as a concept or tool in analytic treatment. It is suggested that we need to turn this myth on its head in the consulting room as well as on screen, and see that the analyst may be the one who is blind; who needs to own up to her own desires in treatment.

Dieses Papier beginnt mit einer Illustration aus der HBO-Serie „In Treatment“ und spielt auf die geschlechtsspezifische Tendenz bei der Darstellung der erotischen Gegenübertragung von männlichen und weiblichen Analysten auf dem Bildschirm an. Die Autorin enthält mehrere klinische Vignetten aus ihrer klinischen Praxis, die sich kritisch mit der Verwendung des ödipalen Mythos als Konzept oder Instrument in der analytischen Behandlung auseinandersetzen. Es wird empfohlen, diesen Mythos sowohl im Sprechzimmer als auch auf dem Bildschirm auf den Kopf zu stellen und zu sehen, dass der Analytiker möglicherweise derjenige ist, der blind ist. wer muss auf ihre eigenen Wünsche in der Behandlung besitzen.

L’autore include diverse vignette cliniche dalla sua pratica clinica, prendendo una posizione critica sull’uso del mito edipico come concetto o strumento nel trattamento analitico. Si suggerisce che dobbiamo trasformare questo mito nel setting terapeutico e sullo schermo, provando a vedere se non sia l’analista ad essere cieco, colui che ha bisogno di padroneggiare i propri desideri durante il trattamento.

Cet article s’ouvre avec une illustration puisée dans la série « En Analyse » (HBO) et fait référence au sexisme avec lequel le contretransfert érotique des analystes masculins et féminins est décrit à l’écran. L’auteur inclut plusieurs vignettes clinique extraites de sa pratique adoptant une approche critique quant à l’utilisation du mythe œdipien comme concept et outil dans la traitement analytique. Il est suggéré ici que nous devons bousculer ce mythe à la fois dans le cabinet de consultation et à l’écran et réaliser que c’est peut-être l’analyste qui est aveugle; qui doit admette son propre désir dans le traitement.

Το παρόν άρθρο ξεκινά με μια αναφορά στην τηλεοπτική σειρά του HBO «Σε θεραπεία» και αναφέρεται στη μεροληψία του φύλου στην απεικόνιση της ερωτικής αντιμεταβίβασης των ανδρών και γυναικών αναλυτών στην οθόνη. Η συγγραφέας αναφέρει αρκετές κλινικές βινιέτες από την κλινική της πρακτική, υιοθετώντας μια κριτική στάση στη χρήση του μύθου του Οιδίποδα ως έννοιας ή εργαλείου στην αναλυτική θεραπεία. Προτείνεται ότι πρέπει να «αναποδογυρίσουμε» αυτόν τον μύθο στο ψυχοθεραπευτικό δωμάτιο, όπως και στην οθόνη, και να αναγνωρίσουμε ότι ο αναλυτής μπορεί να είναι αυτός που είναι τυφλός, αυτός που πρέπει να αντέχει τις επιθυμίες του στη θεραπεία.
