1. Which became accepted, probably under Janet's influence, by the first generation of cultural psychiatrists as the essential mechanism behind ‘primitive psychotherapy’ (e.g. Kiev 1964).

3. On the cathartic cure of neuroses through the clarification of traumatic origins see Janet (1889), Brewer and Freud (1893). Freud chose to use the term ‘unconscious’ in preference to Janet's earlier ‘subconscious’, and ‘psychoanalysis’ rather than Janet's ‘psychological analysis’ (Ellenberger 1970, 539–540).
