The sexual experiences of Latino men who have sex with men who migrated to a gay epicentre in the USA

Abstract

Key informant interviews, in‐depth interviews and focus groups were conducted to examine ways in which social context influenced the behavior of Brazilian, Colombian and Dominican men who have sex with men. First, we investigated how the social context in the home country affected motivation for migration. Findings suggest that Latino men who have sex with men frequently reported coming to the USA to escape homo‐negativity and to achieve greater sexual freedom. The study also examined how the social context encountered in the early years after migration shaped sexual behavior and risk. A majority of the participants reported easy access to sex partners and frequent sexual encounters. The anonymity of living in a gay epicentre such as New York City, often without social connections from the past, was experienced as liberating and conducive to sexual exploration. Moreover, sex in public venues, such as parks and sex cabins, was readily available to those who do not speak English. The tendency to engage in high levels of sexual activity during the early period after arrival in New York City was particularly evident among younger men. Implications for future programme development are discussed alongside prevention efforts targeting migrants during this critical period.

Des entretiens avec des informateurs‐clé, des entretiens en profondeur et des groupes cibles ont été menés pour examiner les processus selon lesquels le contexte social influence les comportements des hommes brésiliens, colombiens et dominicains qui ont des rapports sexuels avec des hommes. Nous avons d'abord examiné comment le contexte social dans le pays d'origine influence la motivation à l'émigration. Les résultats suggèrent que chez les hommes latinos qui ont des rapports avec des hommes, les motivations les plus courantes pour émigrer vers les USA correspondent au désir de fuir l'homo‐négativité et d'accéder à une plus grande liberté sexuelle. L'étude a également examiné comment le contexte social rencontré dans les premières années d'immigration conditionne les comportements et les prises de risque. La plupart des participants ont déclaré avoir un accès facile à des partenaires sexuels et des rencontres sexuelles fréquentes. L'anonymat inhérent à la vie dans un épicentre gay comme New York ‐ souvent sans lien avec les relations sociales passées – est vécu comme libérateur et propice à l'exploration sexuelle. De plus, pour les hommes qui ne parlent pas l'anglais, il est facile d'avoir des rapports sexuels dans les lieux publics comme les parcs ou les vidéo‐cabines. La tendance à une très forte activité sexuelle dans la période qui suit de près l'arrivée à New York est particulièrement évidente chez les hommes les plus jeunes. L'implication de ces résultats pour l'élaboration de futurs programmes de prévention ciblant les migrants pendant cette période critique est discutée.

Resumen

A fin de analizar cómo el contexto influye en el comportamiento de hombres brasileños, colombianos y dominicanos que tienen relaciones con personas del mismo sexo se llevaron a cabo entrevistas con informantes clave, entrevistas exhaustivas y grupos de discusión. Primero investigamos cómo influía el contexto social del país de origen en la decisión de emigrar. Los resultados indican que los latinoamericanos que tienen relaciones sexuales con otros hombres muchas veces reconocieron que el motivo de emigrar a los Estados Unidos fue escapar de un ambiente homofóbico y obtener una mayor libertad sexual. En este estudio también examinamos de qué modo el contexto social que descubrieron en los primeros años después de emigrar definía conductas sexuales de riesgo. Una mayoría de participantes afirmaron que tenían un fácil acceso a parejas sexuales y frecuentes encuentros sexuales. El anonimato de vivir en un epicentro homosexual como Nueva York, muchas veces sin relaciones sociales del pasado, era una experiencia liberadora y contributiva para explorar la sexualidad. Además, tenían a su disposición la opción de tener relaciones sexuales en lugares públicos, como parques y cabinas sexuales, sin necesidad de saber inglés. Esta tendencia de participar en muchas actividades sexuales durante el primer periodo en que llegan a Nueva York era evidente sobre todo entre los jóvenes varones. Aquí planteamos qué repercusiones tendrá esto en el desarrollo de futuros programas para la prevención entre emigrantes durante este periodo crítico.

1. This ongoing, five‐year study is examining the context of sexual encounters of Brazilian, Colombian, and Dominican men who have sex with men in New York City. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are being used to identify aspects of the context that lead to various forms of protected and unprotected sex (NICHD‐ R01 HD 046258; M.C. Zea, P.I.).
