A qualitative analysis of migrant social workers’ work experiences and perceived prejudice from an empowering acculturative integration approach

ABSTRACT

An increasing number of migrant social workers are employed in the UK social work sector. This article explores the acculturative integration experiences of a small group of migrant social workers. We critically observe that research on migrant professionals’ trajectories should adopt theories that emphasise people’s empowerment and potential for agency. We use a framework drawing on liberation psychology for analysing the autobiographical narratives of a sample of migrant social workers employed in England. Findings indicate that the participants perceived prejudice on a number of occasions and circumstances. Even though in their narrative of survival they talked about activating several psychosocial resources, they were skeptical about their professional development and dissatisfied at work. The paper discusses the emerging findings while highlighting the framework’s relevance for understanding these experiences from an empowering acculturation perspective and suggesting ways of improving migrant social workers’ acculturative integration by addressing systemic barriers.

Περίληψη

Στον τομέα της κοινωνικής εργασίας στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο απασχολούνται όλο και περισσότεροι κοινωνικοί λειτουργοί μεταναστευτικής προέλευσης. Το άρθρο αυτό διερευνά την πορεία επιπολιτισμού μίας μικρής ομάδας κοινωνικών λειτουργών μεταναστευτικής προέλευσης. Προτείνεται οι έρευνες που μελετούν την πορεία των επαγγελματιών μεταναστευτικής προέλευσης να υιοθετούν θεωρητικές προσεγγίσεις οι οποίες τονίζουν την ενδυνάμωση των ατόμων και την ικανότητά τους να αναλαμβάνουν ενεργούς ρόλους. Εϕαρμόζεται μία προσέγγιση βασισμένη στην ψυχολογία της απελευθέρωσης για την ανάλυση των αυτοβιογραϕικών αϕηγήσεων ενός δείγματος κοινωνικών λειτουργών μεταναστευτικής προέλευσης που εργάζονται στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Σύμϕωνα με τα αποτελέσματα οι συμμετέχοντες αντιλήϕθηκαν προκατάληψη απέναντί τους πολλές ϕορές και υπό ποικίλες συνθήκες. Παρόλο που στην αϕηγηματική τους ιστορία της ‘επιβίωσης’ συζήτησαν την ενεργοποίηση πολλαπλών ψυχοκοινωνικών διευκολυντικών παραγόντων, αναδύθηκαν σκεπτικοί ως προς την επαγγελματική τους εξέλιξη και μη-ικανοποιημένοι στο εργασιακό πλαίσιο. Το άρθρο συζητάει τα ευρήματα και παράλληλα αναδεικνύει την αξία της προσέγγισης του επιπολιτισμού που υποστηρίζει την ενδυνάμωση των συμμετεχόντων. Τέλος, προτείνει τρόπους βελτίωσης -συγκεκριμένα μέσα από την αντιμετώπιση των συστημικών εμποδίων- των διαδικασιών επιπολιτισμού των κοινωνικών λειτουργών μεταναστευτικής προέλευσης.

Prof Eleni Hatzidimitriadou, CPsychol, FHEA, is a clinical and community psychologist and has held a number of appointments in Greece and the UK in mental health practice and academia. She is currently Head of Research and Enterprise for the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing at Canterbury Christ Church University. Eleni has published widely and led research on self-help and mutual aid for socially excluded populations; health and social care of migrants and ethnic minorities; social care in old age; and, domestic violence and wellbeing.

Dr Maria Psoinos is a social psychologist and has worked as a researcher and lecturer in academia in the UK (University of Cambridge, St George’s University of London, Kingston University) and in Greece (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, American College of Thessaloniki, National School of Public Health). Maria is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK. Maria has published widely on migrants’ and refugees’ psychosocial health; interprofessional research and practice in health and social care; qualitative research methodology.
