Notes

1. Translator’s note. Alludes to the Guenyeli Massacre of 1958 when eight Greek Cypriots were ambushed and killed. The victims had been rounded up for questioning by British security forces and released curiously near the Turkish Cypriot village of Guenyeli, a considerable distance from their own village. The incident sparked off Greek Cypriot allegations that the British aimed at transforming the anti-colonial struggle into an inter-communal conflict.

2. Translator’s note. A Greek word for a festival or feast day.

3. Translator’s note. A wide-mouthed double reed wind instrument used in Turkish and Turkish Cypriot folk music.
