Great expectations: changing social, spatial and emotional understandings of the companion animal–human relationship

Abstract

This paper examines the changing social, legal, spatial and emotional understandings of the companion animal–human relationship in Britain during the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, based upon in-depth interviews with pet owners and professionals involved in the pet industry. This period has seen rapid change in attitudes and practices towards companion animals, bringing benefits for both animal health and welfare, but also increasing social, emotional and financial expectations. Animals have become increasingly integrated into the human home and family, whilst simultaneously subject to increasing control of their behaviour and movements in public space. Such changes have brought a culture of ‘responsible’ pet ownership in which both animals and humans are subject to constant surveillance of their own and others pet-keeping practices. Such expectations are constantly changing and contested, with notions of human identity and status increasingly defined through human–animal relationships. These processes are ongoing and new forms of responsibility are continually evolving, providing new means for caretakers to express their love and care for their animal companions.

Résumé

Cet article examine l’évolution des conceptions sociales, spatiales et émotionnelles de la relation animal de compagnie – humain en Grande-Bretagne pendant la fin du vingtième et le début du vingt et-unième siècles, à partir d’entretiens en profondeur avec des propriétaires d’animaux familiers et des professionnels dans le secteur de l’industrie des animaux familiers. Cette période a connu des changements d’attitude rapides dans les attitudes et les pratiques envers les animaux de compagnie, qui ont bénéficié à la fois à la santé et au bien-être des animaux mais qui ont aussi accru les attentes sociales, émotionnelles et financières. Les animaux ont été de plus en plus intégrés dans le foyer humain et la famille et ont en même temps fait l’objet de plus en plus de contrôle de leur comportement et de leur mouvement dans les lieux publics. De tels changements ont donné naissance à une culture de propriétaires « responsables » d’animaux familiers au sein de laquelle à la fois les animaux et les humains font l’objet de surveillance constante de leur propre pratique de tenue d’un animal familier ainsi que de celle des autres. Ces attentes sont sans cesse en train de changer et d’être contestées, les notions de statut et d’identité humaines étant de plus en plus définies à travers les relations entre humains et animaux. Ces processus sont en cours et de nouvelles formes de responsabilité sont en évolution constante, fournissant de nouveaux moyens aux gardiens d’exprimer leur amour et leur attention à leurs animaux de compagnie.

Este artículo examina las cambiantes interpretaciones sociales, legales, espaciales y emocionales de la relación animal doméstico-humano en Gran Bretaña a finales del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI, basado en entrevistas en profundidad con dueños de mascotas y profesionales involucrados en la industria de mascotas. Este período ha experimentado un rápido cambio en las actitudes y prácticas hacia los animales domésticos, lo que ha traído beneficios tanto para la salud y el bienestar de los animales, como también un aumento de expectativas sociales, emocionales y financieras. Los animales se han integrado cada vez más en el hogar y la familia humanos, mientras que simultáneamente están sujetos a un control creciente de su comportamiento y movimientos en el espacio público. Tales cambios han originado una cultura de la propiedad ‘responsable’ de la mascota en la cual los animales y los seres humanos están sujetos a la vigilancia constante de sus propias y otras prácticas del poseer mascotas. Tales expectativas están cambiando y son disputadas constantemente, con nociones de identidad y estado del ser humano cada vez más definidas a través de las relaciones hombre-animal. Estos procesos están en curso y nuevas formas de responsabilidad están evolucionando continuamente, ofreciendo nuevos medios para que los cuidadores expresen su amor y cuidado por sus animales domésticos.
