Drug use and motivation for treatment in patrons of selected bunks in Uyo, Nigeria: a qualitative perspective

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Bunk patrons constitute a high-risk drug user group in Nigeria but perspectives of this hard-to-reach population have neither been empirically investigated nor properly documented. Exploring the issues of drug use and motivation for treatment from the perspectives of this population is important to understanding the various dimensions of the problem and proffering evidence-based solutions.

Material and methods: Utilizing a qualitative approach, focus group discussion and in-depth interviews were conducted with patrons of three bunks in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Results: Participants had used different types of drugs and substances for more than 8 years. Although not all participants were injecting drug users, majority had injected drugs. Popular drugs in the bunks included cannabis, heroin, alcohol, cigarettes, opiates, cocaine, amphetamine, aphrodisiacs, codeine, tramadol and Rohypnol. Most participants were polydrug users. The motivation for treatment was high although very few had ever been in treatment due to a number of reasons.

Discussion/conclusions: The need for urgent intervention for this population, especially provision of affordable and accessible treatment, was emphasized.
