Table 1. Description of the recommendation categories

Recommendation category	Description
Can be used	Medicines that can be used during pregnancy or lactation without any impact on the fetus/newborn infant. Medicines that are compatible with breast-feeding.
Individual benefit-risk assessment	Medicines that might have a negative impact on the fetus/newborn infant but where untreated disease might carry more risks. Medicines that are stated as a second-, third- or fourth-line drug during pregnancy in treatment guidelines. Medicines that probably have a low risk during breast-feeding, and where the advantages with breast-feeding might exceed the potential risks. Surveillance of the infant might be recommended.
Should not be used	Medicines that are clearly contraindicated during pregnancy due to high risks for the fetus/newborn infant. Medicines stated as not compatible with breast-feeding.
Trimester-specific information	Medicines that have different recommendations during different trimesters, e.g. ‘Individual benefit-risk assessment’ during the first trimester, and ‘Should not be used’ during the second and third trimester.
Not classifiable	Information is available, but is not possible to classify into any of the above categories
