2 Duberman, in a conversation with the compiler, expressed his view that the probable cause of Paul Robeson’s mental breakdown was the cognitive dissonance between his need to see the USSR as the geopolitical bulwark of the international Communist movement (and counterbalance to the US), and his post-WWII era increasing knowledge of the USSR’s shortcomings, and of the crimes committed therein, in particular, anti-Semitic crimes.
