Abstract
In this Introduction I outline the background against which the conference The Matter of Material took place at Turner Contemporary Margate, which was an invitation to develop ideas understood to have emerged from the exhibition Entangled, curated by Karen Wright. I then describe the context in which the discussion took place: that of other exhibitions of a similar kind, the perceived lack of public awareness of textile art initiatives and the importance of following up on the exhibition.
