Proposed relationship between reduced left atrial function, atrial fibrillation (AF), and ischemic stroke.AF is a well-established causal factor for ischemic stroke, with anti-coagulant treatment reducing stroke risk. Reduced left atrial function, both a product and risk marker for AF, is associated with increased stroke risk, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear. It is uncertain whether treating reduced left atrial function, in the absence of AF, reduces ischemic stroke risk.
