Community, family and leisure immersion

ABSTRACT

This study explores the ambiguous term ‘community’ and how close groups of people come to form one. By extracting two core elements, often attributed to designations of community, mutual affection and shared appreciation, this study elucidates how fans of the rock band Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons established close bonds referred to as family through their lengthy and passionate involvement in the leisure outlet of a music scene. Due to extensive personal involvements in various music scenes, fans ultimately came to find the music and coterie of Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons as a place where they could address their individual needs in the comfort of like-minded others who, over time, came to define the closeness of their relationships as family through shared love of music, interaction and care for each other’s well-being.

RÉSUMÉ

Cette étude explore le terme ambigu « communauté »: comment des groupes fermés d’individus parviennent à en former une. En mettant en lumière deux éléments essentiels qui sont souvent attribués à la définition de communauté, soit l’affection mutuelle et la reconnaissance partagée, cette étude explique comment les fans du groupe rock « Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons » créent des liens serrés souvent associés à la famille en raison de leur implication soutenue et passionnée dans l’environnement festif d’une scène musicale. Suite à une implication personnelle active dans diverses scènes musicales, les fans en sont finalement arrivés à considérer la musique et la sous-culture de « Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons » comme un lieu d’expression de leurs besoins individuels où d’autres personnes partagent leurs valeurs. Avec le temps, leur amour de la musique, leur interaction et leur bienveillance mutuelle, les ont amenés à définir leur intimité comme celle d’une famille.
