Climbing Dumbarton Rock: an exploration of climbers’ experiences on sport and heritage from the perspective of existential authenticity

ABSTRACT

Dumbarton Rock represents elements of ancient and medieval Scottish history and has witnessed the prosperity (and decline) of industry. Meanwhile, the Rock plays an important role in Scottish climbing. Its sustainable development has caused much concern for those who love and care about it. Therefore, this research aims to study the meanings of the Rock from the perspective of rock climbing, through analyzing eight interviewees’ experiences. It was found that the special location of the Rock seems to create a place of short-time isolation and liberty to the climbers. Its history and intensive difficulty also improve the climbers’ experience and makes it a great attraction for them. Dumbarton Rock sits at the nexus of ‘lifestyle’/‘adventure’/‘extreme’ sport and Scottish heritage, and this article helps to provide a means by which to pursue qualitative research on existential authenticity in locations where sports tourism overlaps with that of heritage.

RÉSUMÉ

Le Rocher de Dumbarton fait partie de l’histoire écossaise ancienne et médiévale et a été témoin de la prospérité (et du déclin) de l’industrie de l’escalade. Le Rocher a toujours joué un rôle important dans le monde de l’escalade en Écosse. Des préoccupations relatives à son développement durable a fait naître de nombreuses inquiétudes chez les personnes qui l’aiment et s’en soucient. Ainsi, la présente étude a pour objet l’étude des significations du Rocher du point de vue de l’escalade, par l’analyse des expériences de huit personnes qui ont été interrogées. Il a été constaté que l’emplacement spécial du Rocher semble procurer aux grimpeurs un moment d’isolement et de liberté de courte durée. Son histoire et son niveau de difficulté élevé rehaussent également l’expérience vécue par les grimpeurs, ce qui en fait une attraction très prisée. Le Rocher de Dumbarton se trouve à la jonction du sport « style de vie »∕« aventure »∕« extrême » et du patrimoine écossais, et cet article offre un moyen de poursuivre des recherches qualitatives sur l’authenticité existentielle dans des endroits où le tourisme sportif chevauche le tourisme patrimonial.
