Abstract
In this introduction, the author describes the historical context of current antipathy toward psychodynamic ideas among many in the fields of autism and related developmental disabilities. Early psychoanalytic contributions to working with children with autistic spectrum disorders, which have gone largely unrecognized, are traced and provide a backdrop for the papers in this issue.
