Libraries and Seasons of Cancer Survivorship

Pages 279-288 | Published online: 30 Jul 2010

Abstract

Cancer survivorship—from the time of diagnosis to the rest of one's life—is gaining attention in health care management. Knowledge of the ongoing medical and psychosocial needs of cancer survivors has led to the conceptualization of four predictable stages or seasons of survivorship. Librarians should understand cancer survivorship and expand library programs to benefit patients and their families. Critical issues are (Citation1) collection development; (Citation2) networking; (Citation3) online resources; and (Citation4) professional opportunities. Survivorship resources and services offered by the Patient Resource Library (PRL) at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center in Connecticut, are featured.

The author acknowledges the support of Nancy Goodwin, MLS, AHIP, Library Director, Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT.
