Using a “Survivor” Style Game to Guide Nursing Research into Practice

, &
Pages 94-98 | Published online: 02 Feb 2011

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to introduce the nurses to finding and applying information from nursing research to clinical practice. It was designed in a style similar to the elimination game and reality television show “Survivor” (1). The medical librarian offered bibliographic instruction in the form of “reward challenges” in exchange for prizes. Unit policies that were not supported by nursing research were “voted off.” Using a game for teaching nurses to search for and apply research findings to current practice could make adopting the search for evidence-based practice more appealing and make the hospital library more interesting.

Notes

This subcommittee of the St. Joseph Nursing Research Council would like to thank Dawn Murphy (Magnet Coordinator), Carrie Papa (Libraries Director), Maureen Greene, Camille DeGalley (Gift Shop Supervisor), Patti Stockhausen (Clinical Education), and Jan Ancona (Advanced Practice Nursing) for the prize donations. The authors also thank Danielle Withers (Quality Improvement) for the loan of her department's island-themed decorations.
