Successful Management of an Outsourced Large-Scale Digitization Newspaper Project

Tips for Effective Collaboration, Increased Productivity, and Outstanding Deliverables

Abstract

This article uses the case study of the Nevada Digital Newspaper Project (https://nvdnp.wordpress.com/), an extension of the National Digital Newspaper Program (https://www.loc.gov/ndnp/), to introduce proven strategies on how to successfully manage a large-scale digitization project. It provides tips on how to stay within the timeline and deliver products with outstanding quality, leveraging limited human resources, and engaging an external digitization vendor. It discusses practical project management techniques and tools, strategies for establishing collaborative vendor partnerships, and strategies for efficient communication with stakeholders.

Marina Georgieva dedicated the past 3+ years to digitization, metadata management and digital project management and several years of her early career to teaching and lesson planning. Her passion is digitization of archival materials and project management, and ever since she earned her third Masters’ in Library and Information Science (2015) she has been working on small and large scale digitization and metadata projects. Currently she is Visiting Digital Collections Librarian at the University of Nevada – Las Vegas where she manages large-scale digitization projects and metadata remediation projects, and researches ways for improving workflows to achieve higher productivity and more efficiency. In the past few years, Ms. Georgieva has worked on multiple in-house and outsourced digitization projects and she has learned many practical ways and approaches to turn each project into success.
