Table 1. Common threats observed affecting student mental health at the community colleges

Threat	Possible causes (Trauma & Violence)	Effects on mental health
Threats: Inadequate learning space at home; poor support at home; students drop out from their courses; students dropped because of non-payment or non-participation; students enter the classroom with reading and writing deficiencies; not purchasing materials; imprisonment.	Possible causes: Domestic violence; street violence; psychological abuse; deportation; single-parent household; homelessness; low SES; poor diet; time spent in battle as a member of an armed force; the inheritance of generational trauma.	Effects on mental health: Confusion; low self-esteem; stress; anxiety; depression; poor hygiene; violent behavior; altered state of consciousness; premature death. Trauma and violence may trigger and/or amplify illnesses and conditions that are more serious or genetic.
