Religious and Spiritual Values Transactions: A Constant-Comparison Analysis of Grandmothers and Adult-Granddaughters

Pages 184-205 | Published online: 24 May 2011

Abstract

Religious and spiritual development continues throughout the lifespan, with life transitions, trajectories, and stages affecting that development. One important catalyst for these changes is family relationships. This article examines transactions between grandmothers and adult-granddaughters that influence both parties' spiritual and religious values. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight grandmother/adult-granddaughter dyads. Data indicate that grandmothers and adult-granddaughters learn one another's values through multiple transactions including role-modeling, indirect communication, and “just knowing.” Yet, co-learning did not occur in every situation within these dynamic transactions. Implications are given for family interventionists on understanding and developing grandmother/granddaughter relationships and spiritual growth.
