How We Choose to Be With Each Other: A Discussion of Preston and Shumsky's “Toward an Integrative Sensibility: Conversing Across Theoretical Boundaries”

Abstract

The author, from the perspective of having trained, taught, and lived within a comparative institute for nearly twenty years, views Preston and Shumsky's integrative sensibility and their use of the metaphor of immigrants as compelling, optimistic, and consistent with forward edge thinking. To complexify their perspective, the author revisits an old psychoanalytic concept, that of character, in order to explore the role it may play in our willingness to move toward and embrace an integrative sensibility. Using the concept of character in a contemporary and non-pathologizing way, the author considers character in terms of the way we are with each other in relation to otherness and alterity within the field. By considering the way we shape and live out theoretical preferences marked by who we are, the author concludes that who we are as people and how we are with each other matters far more than our theory choices.

La autora, desde la perspectiva de haberse formado, de enseñar y de vivir dentro de una institución comparativa durante unos 20 años, considera que la sensibilidad integrativa de Preston y Shumsky, y su uso de la metáfora de los inmigrantes, es convincente, optimista y consistente con un pensamiento progresista. Para complejizar la perspectiva de éstas, la autora vuelve a visitar un viejo concepto psicoanalítico: el carácter, para explorar el papel que puede jugar en nuestra voluntad a movernos hacia y/o abrazar una sensibilidad integrativa. Usando el concepto de carácter de una manera contemporánea y no-patologizante, la autora considera la idea de carácter como la manera en que estamos con cada uno en relación a la alteridad dentro del campo. Al tener en cuenta la manera en que damos forma y vivimos las preferencias teóricas marcadas por quien somos, la autora concluye que lo que somos como personas y cómo estamos con el otro son más importantes que nuestras elecciones teóricas.

Forte de l'expérience d'avoir été formée, d'avoir enseigné et vécu dans un institut comparatif pendant presque vingt ans, l'auteure qualifie de convaincantes, optimistes et conformes à une pensée de pointe la sensibilité intégrative de Preston et Shumsky ainsi que la métaphore des immigrants. Complexifiant la perspective, elle revisite un concept psychanalytique connu, le caractère, et explore le rôle que celui-ci joue dans notre désir d'aller vers ou d'adopter une sensibilité intégrative. Situant le concept dans une vision contemporaine non pathologisante, elle définit le caractère comme la façon dont nous nous comportons les uns avec les autres lorsque nous sommes confrontés à la différence et l'altérité dans notre propre domaine. Enfin, observant la manière dont s'organisent nos préférences théoriques selon ce que nous sommes, elle conclut que ce que nous sommes comme personnes et comment nous interagissons importent beaucoup plus que nos choix théoriques.

L'autrice, avendo un'esperienza di vita ventennale di insegnamento e formazione all'intyerno di un Istituto di studi comparativi, considera la sensibilità integrativa di Preston e Shumsky e il loro utilizzo della metafora dei migranti degna di attenzione, ottimistica e coerente con un pensiero rivolto alle potenzialità evolutive. Per aggiungere complessità aa questa prospettiva, l'Autrice rivista un vecchio concetto della psicoanalisi, quello di carattere, per esplorare il ruolo che esso può svolgere nella nostra disponibilità a dirigerci e/o ad abbracciare una sensibilità integrativa. Nell'impiego del concetto di carattere in una modalità contemporanea e non patologizzante, l'Autrice ne tiene conto in ragione del modo in cui ci rapportiamo l'uno all'altro relativamente all’ essere altro e all’ alterità all'interno del nostro ambito. Nel considerare il modo in cui diamo forma e viviamo le nostre preferenze teoriche segnate da chi effettivamente siamo, l'Autrice conclude che ciò che siamo come persone e come siamo l'uno con l'altro, conta assai di più delle nostre scelte teoriche.

Die Autorin betrachtet Prestons und Schumskys integrative Sensibilität und ihre Benutzung der Metapher der Einwanderer - aus der Perspektive jemandes, die seit bald 20 Jahren in einem schulenübergreifenden Institut ausgebildet wurde, hier unterrichtet und gelebt hat - als überzeugend, optimistisch und kompatibel mit einem auf Weiterentwicklung gerichteten Denken. Um der Perspektive von Preston und Schumsky größere Komplexität zu verleihen, nimmt die Autorin ein altes psychoanalytisches Konzept wieder auf, um die Rolle zu untersuchen, die es für unsere Bereitschaft spielt, uns weiterzuentwickeln und/oder eine integrative Sensibilität zu entwickeln: das Konzept des Charakters. Indem sie das Konzept des Charakters in einer zeitgenössischen und nicht-pathologisierenden Weise benutzt, betrachtet die Autorin den Charakter in der Art und Weise, wie wir in unserem Gebiet in Bezug auf Andersartigkeit und Verschiedenheit mit einander umgehen. Indem sie berücksichtigt, in welcher Weise die Art, in der wir unsere theoretischen Vorlieben formen und ausleben, geprägt hat, wer wir sind, schlussfolgert die Autorin, dass, wer wir als Person sind und wie wir mit einander umgehen viel wichtiger ist, als welche Theorie wir wählen.
