Steam Injectors Using the Steam Flow of the Passive Autocatalytic Recombiner in ESBWR

Abstract

This work presents the innovator design of a system for the reduction of non-condensable gases in the containment during hypothetical design base accidents in an advanced ESBWR. The system is composed of a steam injector and a passive autocatalytic recombiner, which is called, in this work, SIPAR. The driven flow of the steam injector is steam flow at low pressure of the passive autocatalytic recombiner. In the throat of the steam injector, the hydrodynamic phenomena occur in two-phase flows due to condensation steam when the water is suctioned by the steam injector. The steam injector can be used to pump cold water and produce an outlet water pressure, which is higher than the steam inlet pressure. The steam injector and passive autocatalytic recombiner were modeled with TRAC-BF1 to study the performance of the steam injector at low pressure. Preliminary results show that the SIPAR can be installed into reactor containment for the reduction of non-condensable gases during hypothetical design base accidents in an advanced ESBWR.
