Spousal assault and the Child and Family Protection Unit (CFPU) of the Uganda Police Force

Pages 31-41 | Published online: 24 Jun 2008

Abstract

The study sought to establish the effectiveness of the Child and Family Protection Unit of the Uganda Police Force in handling spousal assault cases in Uganda. It was found that lack of clear laws on spousal assault, as well as the existence of laws that are not gender responsive under which the unit operates, coupled with the poor budgetary allocations to the unit, have all combined to undermine its effectiveness. Recommendations were made including enactment of specific laws on spousal assault, the initial step being expeditious passing of the Domestic Relations Bill to provide a favourable legal environment for the unit.
