1. for the purposes of this essay, I understand by métissage very generally any cultural or ethnic mixture, regardless of regional or racial specificity, whether between two or many poles. I understand the term métis as the human individual embodying this concept: an offspring pulling together two or more ethnicities and/or cultures.
