“What’s the Middle Ground? Am I Ever Going to be the Perfect Teacher?:” Self-Study of a Doctoral Student’s Acculturation Process

Abstract

In higher education, doctoral training has been identified as a process of stewardship development whereby individuals learn the knowledge and skills required to advance their respective disciplines. Self-study of teacher education practices is one approach that has gained the interest of doctoral students to help them understand their own development whilst also forging recommendations for others in publications. In this self-study, we worked to understand the experiences of Shrehan, a teacher from England beginning doctoral study in the USA. Shrehan had no experience teaching at the college level prior to moving to the USA, and she saw self-study as an opportunity to understand her development and acculturation into an unfamiliar system of higher education. Data were collected through journaling, critical-friend discussions, and artefacts, as well as student data in the form of surveys, exit slips, and focus-group interviews. Qualitative data analysis of Shrehan’s experiences was guided by the four stages of acculturation theory – honeymoon, culture shock, adjustment, and recovery. Shrehan’s journey emphasizes the importance of getting to know undergraduate students and building rapport as key aspects of teaching at the college level. Self-study provided Shrehan with a heightened personal-identity awareness that increased her cultural sensitivity and broadened her worldview. Results are discussed with reference to acculturation theory and future directions for research are provided.

En la educación superior, la formación doctoral se ha identificado como un proceso de desarrollo de responsabilidad, mediante el cual los sujetos aprenden conocimientos y habilidades requeridas para hacer avanzar sus respectivos campos disciplinares. El self-study de las prácticas de formación docente es una aproximación que ha ganado interés entre los estudiantes de doctorado para ayudarles a comprender su propio desarrollo, mientras que forja recomendaciones para otros por medio de publicaciones. En este self-study, intentamos comprender las experiencias de Shrenan, una profesora de Inglaterra que estaba comenzando sus estudios doctorales en Estados Unidos. Shrenan no tenía experiencia enseñando en educación superior antes de venir a Estados Unidos, y encontró en el self-study una oportunidad para comprender su propio desarrollo y aculturación al interior de un sistema educativo que no le era familiar. Los datos se recogieron desde bitácoras, discusiones con amigos críticos, artefactos, así como también datos de los estudiantes por medio de encuestas, tickets de salida de clase, y entrevistas de grupo focal. El análisis de los datos cualitativos de las experiencias de Shrenan estuvo guiado por las cuatro etapas de la teoría de la aculturación: luna de miel, shock cultural, ajuste y recuperación. El viaje de Shrenan destaca la importancia de conocer a los estudiantes de pregrado y de establecer relaciones de cordialidad con ellos como aspectos clave de la enseñanza en educación superior. El self-study le proveyó a Shrenan una conciencia más clara respecto a su identidad personal, incrementando su sensibilidad cultural, y expandiendo su visión de mundo. Los resultados se discuten con relación a la teoría de la aculturación y se proveen directrices para investigaciones futuras.
