[1] There is a growing scholarship on the impact of the ‘Special Period’ on race relations and on Afro-Cuban culture. For some examples, see Alvarado (Citation1988), Espina Prieto and Rodríguez Ruiz (Citation2006), Blue (Citation2007), Sawyer (Citation2006), de la Fuente and Glasco (Citation1997), and de la Fuente (Citation2001, pp. 317–334). On the impact on Afro-Cuban culture, see Menéndez Vázquez, (Citation1995), Fernández Robaina (Citation1997), West-Durán (Citation2004), and Fernades (Citation2006). Cuban journals such as Temas, Catauro, and La Gaceta de Cuba have published materials on this subject.

[2] Cabrera's work has received some attention in Cuba lately. Her El Monte was reissued by Letras Cubanas in 1993 and Catauro: Revista Cubana de Antropología devoted its first issue (January–June 2000) to her work. Several of the papers included in the journal, however, had been written and published originally in the 1950s.

[3] For examples, see Aline Helg (Citation1995) and Naranjo Orovio (Citation2005). See also the discussion of Bronfman's Measures of Equality below.
