An eleventh-century Venn diagram

Abstract

Attention is drawn to the use of Venn diagrams for two sets in late eleventh-century manuscripts on music. In the diagrams each set consists of notes with certain qualities and the intersection of the two sets is clearly marked as containing the notes possessing both qualities.
