Hamid Karzai comes from a family of Afghan politicians and studied international relations and political science in India. He served as interim and later elected President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014, winning elections in 2004 and 2009. Before leaving office, he refused to sign the Status of Forces Agreement with the United States. He remains an outspoken voice in Afghan politics.
