Notes

1. I use the abbreviations bce, meaning ‘before the Common Era’ to represent dates before 0, and ce meaning ‘Common Era’ to represent dates after 0. They correspond to the familiar bc and ad notation.

2. Dan Dombrowski's Contemporary Athletics and Ancient Greek Ideals (2009) may be an exception, but it tends rather to examine modern sport philosophy's use of ancient concepts rather than comparing ancient philosophy directly with ancient sport practices.

3. For a comparison of Chinese and Greek conceptions of virtue as they relate to sport see Reid (2010).

4. This is based on a passage in Philostratos (Gym. 5). For the latest on the scholarly debate over the passage, see Valavanis (2006, 141–5).
