1 Despite Napolean’s antagonistic relationship with the Papacy, the fact that Pope Pius VII is shown to be congenially looking over Napolean as he places the crown over Josephine’s head in Jacques-Louis David’s 1807 painting The Coronation of Napolean is evidence that Napolean cared about the ‘optics’ of the situation.
