Author information

Isabel M. Estrada-Portales, Ph.D., M.S., is a Fulbright scholar, focused on media, communications, health and racism in Ecuador, United States, Brazil and Cuba. She holds a B.A. in Journalism, University of Havana; a M.S. in Mass Communications, Florida International University; and a Ph.D. in Spanish and Cultural Studies, Georgetown University, Washington DC. In 1996, she won Cuba's Pinos Nuevos national book competition in the Social Sciences category, with her book Retóricas, astucias, convenciones… Las ideologías profesionales de los periodistas cubanos. The book was censored after publication. She serves on the Board of Proyecto Salud Clinic, in Montgomery County, Maryland. She currently leads the Communications department at the National Institutes of Health, Office of Behavioral Health and Social Sciences Research.
