Table 3. Steps and applications of thematic analysis.

Steps	Applicability
1. Familiarization	I transcribed audio-recorded data with the intention of familiarizing myself with it. I further read through the Word document (transcribed data) several times to get familiar with it.
2. Coding	I went through the transcript of every interview and highlighted everything that stood out as relevant or potentially interesting, and I highlighted all the phrases and sentences that matched these codes. I then collated together all the data into groups identified by code. These codes allowed me to gain a condensed overview of the main points and common meanings that recur throughout the data.
3. Generating themes	I looked at codes created, identified patterns among them, and created themes. Some codes were vague and had to fall away. Some codes were combined into a single theme.
4. Reviewing themes	I returned to the data set and compared the identified themes against it.
5. Defining and naming themes	Defining themes involves formulating exactly what we mean by each theme and figuring out how it helps in understanding the data. Naming themes involves coming up with a succinct and easily understandable name for each theme.
